Staff who are able to “show themselves at their best” at work are more successful and more motivated. A penal institution used Hogan to improve the selection process for their probation officers. A special profile of requirements was drawn up based on the personality profiles of successful probation officers. Conscientiousness, a sense of duty, determination and orientation, combined with an enthusiasm for working with people, are key characteristics of successful probation officers. Newly employed probation officers with the corresponding profile were three times more likely to be rated as top performers than those without the corresponding profile.
