On risks and potential side effects…

Bad managers create more health problems than family crises or financial difficulties do. Staff usually quit their bosses rather than their jobs. People don’t become managers by being promoted to managerial positions. Being successful in sales doesn’t make people successful at running a sales team. Success on the football pitch doesn’t mean someone will be a good coach (although the opposite is often true). People need support in their new role. What made them successful in the past won’t necessarily do so in the future. One of the best ways of providing support is to give people a mirror that shows their effect on others. The effect they have on others will determine how others judge them - and this reputation will decide their management success.
